8th July - Fibbers, York   spacer

Ellen Phillips & Keith Rickaby

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but for me this was the best Eves gig I've been to so far.

Fibbers was half seated, for once, probably in deference to it being an 'unplugged' gig, and there was a very positive and happy atmosphere. (Although that could just have been me and have had something to do with the beer I was drinking...) It was quite a cosy and intimate gig - although I was close to the front - I don't know what it was like right at the back, but the people there seemed happy standing and listening to the music.

The support band, who I believe were called something along the lines of 'Accidental Tourists' were very good - keyboard, lead singer/acoustic guitar and flute.

The Eves were very much on form, and the friend and my partner that I was there with, who've not seen the band before and don't know much about them except what I've burbled on about, had a great evening. There were quite a few familiar faces in the audience, as always, and I shall be telling Arthur just what a great evening he's missed - I don't think he'd give up his 3 weeks in the States for that, though!

Plus, in the interval, Marty was out front, by the side of the stage, and didn't seem to mind being asked to autograph things. He even didn't seem to mind talking to me - not that I was drooling, oh, no, not at all! ;)

So, I had a great time, and quite a few people I know who also live in York turned out to see the Eves play, and I think they had a good time, too.

Well, must go and do other things now, like think of Marty... heh, heh!

Happy listening, y'all! Ellen Phillips

I have to agree with Ellen over this one - it's the best Eves gig that I've been to over the years (I thought that the one in Leeds was good until I got to this one).

I was fortunate enough to get to Fibbers before the door opened and managed to get a seat near the stage, something that I hadn't anticipated happening. Yes, there was some talking during the set which irritated the hell out of me (even though I was next to one of the PA stacks). I've come to expect talking during gigs over the years, but I agree with those who comment against it - you either go along to a gig to listen and enjoy or keep your mouth shut and talk about other stuff in the car on the way home.

Still, it was a grand night. The person that came along to the gig with me only found out about the show on Thursday and thoroughly enjoyed it, even though she'd never heard much by All About Eve and only came along because she fancied seeing a gig.

Am looking forward to whatever the next show is that I can get along to, but in the meantime, see if you can spot the All About Eve reference in the title of one of the features in the August issue of Climber magazine. There are no prizes for guessing what was on the stereo when the article was written.

Cheers

Keith Rickaby
