All About Eve's Julianne Regan found fame on Top of
the Pops, she did this by not miming at all and looking, frankly, silly.
Tonight however she is the loveliest, happiest woman in music and a
semi-full Zodiac is equally happy to indulge her.
The set opens with 1987s 'Flowers in Our Hair' and is followed by a
mix of new and old songs each as atmospheric and whimsical as the previous.
'In the Clouds' is the first song to really strike a chord with the
audience, it ebbs and flows brilliantly and Julianne's voice is a joy
to behold, with it's at times gravely and yet stunningly elegant sound.
The leading lady's huge smile and insane stage presence
really adds to the show, she is resplendent in a black and pink homemade
outfit which she likens to Kat Slater of Eastenders though the audience
disagrees.
New Material sounds every bit the Goth-pop-rock that
we're used to and the promise of a re-release of 'Martha's Harbour'
is backed up by a gorgeous new B-side.
Ghost' and 'Aquamarina' stand out as spine tingling,
dramatic moments of the set and set closer Every Angel is a great way
to finish, though Julianne tells us 'of course it's not really the last
song, it's just that b*****ks we have to do!' Of course finish they
did not and D for Desire proves to be the highlight of the evening for
the leather clad crowd as they hark back to their younger more rubbery
days.
Prior to this evening I had never chanced upon this
group of somewhat Cure-esque musicians, the whole band sound great and
well… it's all great! Julianne's last words before leaving us
"happiness is overrated"… tell that to this crowd, you
made them positively bouncy!
