Mice - Post Permanent   spacer

After loosing her contract with Permanent after their break up Julianne sent a note to those she wanted to keep in-the-know. Here are some extracts from that...

Julianne describes the demise of Permanent Records :

"I was incredibly pissed off about it because it had apparently been known to the 'boss' for some time that the end was nigh. It would've been nice to have been told so I could get a safety net and plan-B together. I know that's not very rock and roll is it. Not very Jim Morrisson ... but then Jim was a bit of a twat.

Once I got the news, much of my time had to be taken up with legal rubbish. Permanent folded owing me and many others sums of money. Now, I'm no big materialist, nut you've got to pay the rent. So, that took ages and came to nothing. Also, because I was basically told; 'You are now out of contract', I'd obviously not got any plans. I thought I'd be playing the Mice stuff on a few more tours and generally promoting it. So I had to have a BIG think...."

So what's going to happen to the Mice album ?

"Despite many letters / faxes and phone calls, I'm not much nearer to finding out what's going to happen to that album. I need to find out if they want to sell the rights to a third party."

There were other interests in the album when permanent went bust, but what's happening there is still not known.

"Another opinion is to start all over again. Put the Mice experience down to um, experience, and just get another album recorded. Again, somebody is interested in doing that .... A UK record company.
So here I am again at that familiar 'square 2' place. Although it's a bit of a downer that the album just came out and died in it's arse without a soul noticing, the positive thing to have come out of all this is that I am now free of Permanent, which, apart from the efforts of Anton and Ella, was indeed a poor excuse for a record co.

I've wanted to be free from Permanent for ages. I'd know almost from the start that it was a tinpot kind of thing. Yes, there were lovely enthusiastic individuals working there but they were constantly being compromised in their efforts by fading finances and lack of cohesion and direction from above."

So what's next, are you working with anyone now ?

"I'm not sure whether it's going to be another Mice album, or, gulp, a SOLO album. I'm also working with a Belgian friend on some interesting stuff. Lots of international tape swapping going on. And, Belgium isn't boring. Just look at their rich tradition as a world leader in confectionery. Also, there's a French singer called Jean-Louis Murat. He's just released a new album, (in France). Anyway, a while back I wrote in French and a mutual friend passed it onto him. He liked it, we had a chat, and he suggested we did a duet. Now that I'm free, I can pursue that. If he's still interested and has the time, that would be fab to do.

I'm also writing with Polly who did the Ubermaus with me. She's a very good songwriter. We are NOT working on Ubermaus 2, but on more song type songs. (Polly used to be in the Popinjay's) We've know each other for years and always had a healthy disinterest in each others musical careers until now. Put it this way, the Popinjay albums are rarely found on my decks and you won't find Polly swaying to Gypsydance in her living room.

Also Marty now lives in England full-time, so I'm pretty sure that we might write a few tunes together. Same with my lovely mate Andy Cousin. But, he's busy trying to get a record deal for his new project 'The Lucy Nation' which is him and a Swedish singer / songwriter called Anna Nystrom ... Oh yes, you know, the one who was in the Mice line up for the last two gigs. (See Phoenix reviews) Its very contemporary. It reminds me a bit of Garbage/Portishead/Bjork but it's got a lot of its own identity as well.

Its a shame that it's all crashed like this, but I think it was always doomed by it being on Permanent.
