Mice -
Julianne
Regan's first band, All About Eve, was a little ahead of their
time. Though they received a fair amount of notoriety in the UK, elsewhere
they were destined to be cult favorites at best, while similar albeit
inferior bands like the Cranberries and the Sundays could
later be heard floating through beer commercials and mass-consumption
pop stations everywhere. Julianne is back with a new band called Mice,
and a new sound as well. Her trademark ethereal voice is still in top
form, occasionally enhanced by wild production effects. Enlisitng the
talents of Levitation guitarist Christian Hayes, Church guitarist Marty.
Marty Wilson-Piper and former Eve members Mark Price and Andy Cousin,
Mice have crafted a sound that is right on time for the Nineties. This
is pop music with a twist: catchy three-minute verse-chorus-verses.
Supplemented by searing guitar solos, tongue-twisted lyrics, and various
creative studio experiments. Of the many standout tracks , 'Miss
World' and the new single 'Dear Sir' are my favorites. 'Miss
World' is a unique look inside a woman's rise and fall from fame. It
features some of the most powerful acoustic and electric guitar work
on the disk. 'Dear Sir' is a twisted little yarn about obsession. It
is a textbook pop gem---infectious, unforgettable and brief. Some of
the album's most inventive lyrics can be found on the second single
'The Milkman' : 'Supercalifragilistic can get sado-masochistic
very quickly...but you're the milkman of human kindness.' For any fan
of well-written pop music, Mice is 45 minutes in heaven.
