Julianne on the Harmony Ambulance project
This was the first thing I did, very much on
the rebound, after All About Eve folded following the apparent 'failure'
Ultraviolet. Geoff Travis at Rough Trade Records knew me vaguely through
my then manager. He had the idea to team me up with a guy called Gilbert
Gabriel, one of The Dream Academy, and Gilbert's chum Tim.
I recorded a single with them, (that they wrote),
for the Rough Trade Singles Club called 'All This And Heaven'. The B-side
was a cover of a song called 'Nature's Way' originally done by a 70's
band called Spirit.
It was all very enjoyable, Tim and Gilbert were vibey guys, but, it
felt so 'wrong' after All About Eve. It felt too 'soon'.
They asked me to join full-time and Geoff was really
into the idea, but, it was really not where my heart was heading. I didn't
know what I wanted to do, but it wasn't this.
Natures
Way / All This And Heaven
Dai Davies took me to see Geoff Travis, fabled man
behind Rough Trade and other legendary things. He said he'd like me
to do something for the Rough Trade Singles Club, with a guy called
Gilbert Gabriel who had been in The Dream Academy, and Gilbert's friend
Tim.
I went round to their place, listened to some stuff,
sang a few songs....It was all good stuff, but, it wasn't All About
Eve and I was still wandering around with a ghostly umbilical cord attached.
Still, there was one song I liked a lot. It was called 'All This And
Heaven', so we made a demo of it and brough it in to play to Geoff.
He loved it, and suggested that we also do a cover of a song called
'Nature's Way' by a band called Spirit. For 'ATAH', the line-up was
me, Gilbert, Tim, a chap called Monti,( who was in Curve), who sorted
out the drum loops, and on bass, a girl called Claire Kenny, who'd been
in Shakespears Sister and various other things.
For 'Nature's Way', it was just me, Gilbert and Tim.
Engineering it was a chap called Andy Jackson, a friend of Gilbert,
who works with Pink Floyd. And so, The Harmony Ambulance had it's first
and only release. The name comes from my unnerving obsession with having
to harmonise with everything I hear. I even do it when an ambulance
drives by.
Although I really do like that record, it was only
ever going to be a one-off. Geoff was keen for us to do more, but I
was persuing something else. I didn't really know what it was yet.
